Morning Prayer

Psalms 119:34-38 reads: "Give me understanding, that I may keep your law and observe it with my whole heart. Lead me in the path of your commandments, for I delight in it. Incline my heart to your testimonies, and not to selfish gain! Turn my eyes from looking at worthless things; and give me life in your ways. Confirm to your servant your promise, that you may be feared."

Understanding

A lot of us read the Word, but do we understand it? Proverbs reads: In all your getting get understanding." Proverbs 4:7. The Pharisees and the Saduccees read the Scriptures during every week, but did they understand them? Jesus said "You search the Scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal life; and it is they that bear witness about me," - John 5:39 Though they read the scriptures, they did not understand them. But why? Paul wrote in 1 Corinthians 2:8 "None of the rulers of this age understood this, for if they had, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory." So how do we understand the Word of God, and know that we truly do understand?

Whole Heart

What does the Psalmist mean by "whole heart"? When they asked Jesus what was the greatest commandment in the law the first thing Jesus said was: "You shall Love the Lord your God with all your Heart..." Matthew 22:36-40. Not your physical heart, but the heart of your life. You, your existence, and everything that makes up you. For you cannot live with your heart, so Jesus is saying Love God with all of you, with everything you have. Including your material possessions, for the Lord reminds us: "For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also." - Matthew 6:21.

Selfish Gain

A lot of us read the Word, and seek the Lord for selfish gain. For this I am guilty as well. We all want a better life. It is natural to want to improve in all of our circumstances. But the Psalmist reminds us of what is more important than the improvement of our lives and it is the testimonies of our Lord. For Colossians reminds us to set our mind on the things above, and not on the things of the earth - Colossians 3:2. Jesus told us to lose our lives for Him, and that: "Whoever loses his life for my sake will find it." - Matthew 10:39

The Promise

The Lord has made a promise with His children, and God is not a man that He should lie - Numbers 23:19. He made a covenant with Abraham (Genesis 15:2-19) and all of his descendants, then Jesus came and made a new covenant (Luke 22:19-21). A covenant is a promise from God. God promised through His son Jesus that whosoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life (John 3:16). Do you believe? If you believed in Him you would Love Him. And Jesus said: "If you love me, you will keep my commandments - John 14:15. - Amen.
