Psalms 25:9-10 has been a scripture the Holy Spirit has been ministering to me for 2 weeks now. It is what is keeping me walking in Christ instead of reacting out of frustration and ego. The word of God comes to mind in those times of trial and challenge and these verses have rescued me.
Humility
The beginning theme of verse 9 is humility. "He leads the humble in what is right, and teaches the humble his way, (ESV). This verse tells me to be led and taught His ways by the Father you first must be humble, but what is humble? The Bible also uses the word "meek" at times to describe a characteristic of humility. But what is humble?
What is Humble?
The first time the word humble comes up in the Bible the Lord is humbling the Pharaoh of Egypt. He says through Moses: Exodus 10:3 says So Moses and Aaron came in to Pharaoh and said to him, “Thus says the Lord God of the Hebrews: ‘How long will you refuse to humble yourself before Me? Let My people go, that they may serve Me". Humility is first putting God's needs, wants, desires, and ways before your own. Being subservient to the King, knowing that you are but a speck of dust in His world, but made the righteousness of Christ through His son, is the beginning of humility. (2 Cor. 5:21). Capitulating to the will of the Father, is the core of humility. When Jesus said: "Not my will but your will be done," (Luke 22:42). Jesus gave us the best example of what humility is; what it looks and sounds like.
Verse 10
The ESV reads: "All the paths of the Lord are steadfast love and faithfulness, for those who keep his covenant and his testimonies". Yet the KJV reads: "All paths of the Lord are mercy and truth unto such as keep his covenant and his testimonies". And yet the Amplified Bible tells us: "All paths of the Lord are lovingkindness and goodness and truth and faithfullness to those who keep His covenant and His testimonies".
ESV vs KJV vs Amplified
Mercy and truth are different from steadfast love and faithfulness, and yet the amplified tends to almost include all the words and characteristics pertaining to this scripture when it says: "lovingkindness and goodness and truth and faithfullness".
For Me
The words steadfast love and faithfulness has caused me to pull back from my fleshly reactions into a righteous and loving response instead. These words steadfast love imply unconditional love, and faithfulness implies being faithful through all things in all things. This is what the Lord calls us to be among other for we were made in His image, and this is what He is to us.
So If you want to learn the ways of the Lord, as we all should want: Allow your learning to begin within humility, then apply loving kindness, mercy and truth to every encounter you come across, responding in steadfast love and faithfulness instead of reacting in ego and carnality. Allow this scripture to fulfill you and wash you clean of your former ways. Allow it to be a lamp unto your feet, and a light onto your path. Psalms 119:105
